Windows Aero is the GUI available in most Windows Vista and Windows 7 versions. Aero is not available in the basic versions of windows as they are designed to work on lower spec machines like netbooks etc. The problem comes when you have purchased a copy of Windows Vista/7 Basic and using it on a machine more than capable of running Windows Aero.
Aero is normally not available in Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows 7 Home Basic. Furthermore there is an internal Hardware Check which only allows you to run Aero if passed. This is now not a problem since Aero Enabler has been released.
With Aero Enabler you can enable Aero and additionally disable the Hardware Check if required. Its also free, which makes it worth downloading.
The minimum requirements to run Windows Aero are:
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB of system memory
- DirectX 9 compatible graphics processor with a Windows Display driver Model (WDDM) driver, Pixel shader 2.0 in hardware, and a minimum of 128 MB of Video RAM
- 40 GB hard drive with 15 GB free space

When you load Aero Enabler you are met with a simple UI. There is a button to enable/disable Windows Aero and also a ‘Disable Hardware Check’ tick box. If you tick that box it will enable Aero even if your systems hardware does not meet the minimum requirements.
Aero Enabler Requirements:
NET Framework 3.5 (or higher)
Windows Vista / 7 Home Basic
