Installing the Homebrew Channel on your Nintendo Wii

nintendo wii Installing the Homebrew Channel on your Nintendo WiiThe Homebrew Channel is an application for the Nintendo Wii which allows you to load homebrew applications from an SD card inserted into the front of your Nintendo Wii. Once you have installed it you can launch the Homebrew Channel directly from the Wii System Menu just like other Wii Channels.

Some of the Homebrew Applications available include DVD Players, Disc Loaders, USB Game Loaders and some other great applications which I will go through in future posts. You can also search for Homebrew Applications on the net.

Installing the Homebrew Channel is fairly easy. Please follow the steps below very carefully:

Requirements

  • Nintendo Wii with System Menu 4.2 (if you have something lower please update)
  • SD Card – Formatted as FAT16 512mb or higher (max 2gb)
  • Files for SD Card – Click Here to Download (Mirror 1) (Mirror 2)
  • Instructions (below)

Instructions

Firstly make sure there is nothing on your SD Card and Format it to FAT 16.

Copy the files which you have downloaded above to the SD Card, making sure you keep the file and folder structure intact.

Insert the SD Card into the front of the Wii and turn it on.

Once you are at the System Menu, click on the SD Card Icon down at the bottom left of the System Menu.

Once loaded click on the SD Card Tab at the top right of the screen. You will then get a message pop up asking if you want to load boot.dol or boot.elf just choose yes.

You should then end up at the following screen:

Once at the screen above just press the [A] Button to continue.

You will then be presented with the following screen:

When you get to the screen above scroll up to ‘Install The Homebrew Channel’ and follow the on screen instructions.

Once installed you can restart your Wii by pressing the Reset Button on the front.

When you get back to your Wii System Menu you should now see the Homebrew Channel which will look like this:

If you start the homebrew channel you should end up with a menu smiler to the picture below. It may look slightly different as the items that appear in the menu will depend on what you have on your SD Card.

You are probably unsure as to what you can use the Wii Homebrew Channel for, but your world has just been opened up to a whole load of new Nintendo Wii Applications that you didn’t even know existed. Please remember not to run anything in the Homebrew Channel unless you know what it does. You can seriously cause damage.

Watch out for my new posts over the next few days which will show you how to install various things using the Homebrew Channel.

If you have any questions or comments please post below and I will do my best to answer the questions.

2.Do i download staright to the sd?or first to the computer and then copy to SD card?
3.if i have done so rit,why wont nothing show up in the SD card?

  2. Chris says:

Go to the Settings Menu and it will tell your System Menu version.

You have to download to computer and extract the files first, then copy to SD card. Make sure your SD card is formatted in FAT32.

  3. Sergio says:

ok,i’ve tried to format but it only says sync,or syncronize.
    is that the same thing?
also, this might sound stupid, what do you mean by”extracting the files”?
p.s.I am so sorry for asking so many questions, its that im new to the whole wii thing a barely know how to follow instructions right.

  4. Chris says:

No you need to go to My Computer then right click on the SD Card and select Format.

    Hi Chris

I want to try this soft mod in the near future & I’m reading my way through your site in preparation. One thing I’m a little unsure about is the use of the SD card. It’s clearly essential for transferring files from PC to Wii. Do we need to leave it in the Wii once the soft mod is complete? If yes, why?

    With Thanks

Your Homebrew Applications are stored on the SD Card.

In your instructions, you say to format the SD card to FAT 16 max 2gb. Later, in a comment, you say to format the SD card to Fat 32. I want to try it but am not clear on this. Also, will wii flow copy to an SD card?

  11. Chris says:

    FAT32 is fine.

Also WiiFlow runs from the SD Card so yes needs to be on the SD Card.
