Nintendo Wii 4.2 Safe Firmware Updater

February 4th, 2010 by Chris | Filed under Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo Wii SoftmodI have been asked by a few people to explain an easier / safer way to update to System Menu 4.2. After a little bit of research I found the Wii 4.2 Safe Firmware Updater.

The Wii 4.2 Safe Firmware Updater will detect your region, download and install all of the NECESSARY IOSes, your specific system menu, and the shopping channel update from v4.2 It will NOT touch your cIOSes, stub anything, or touch your boot2. It also will NOT trucha sign any of the IOSes it downloads and installs.

Once you have updated to 4.2 I suggest you re-softmod your Wii following my 4.2 Softmod Guide. Just to make sure its all up to date.

Install Instructions:

  • Setup you Wii’s WiFi connection as it will need to download files.
  • Copy the “apps” folder to your SD card and run with the Homebrew Channel and follow the onscreen prompts.

This updater will work with a Wii from ANY REGION.

CREATOR’S NOTES
This is based off of my offline guide to upgrade any console to v4.2 safely. This is a modification of the Shop Channel and IOS61 Installer by tona. It has been rigorously tested and should not brick anyone, but as usual, use it at your own risk. Source included of course.

It will detect your region, download and install all of the NECESSARY IOSes, your specific system menu, and the shopping channel update from v4.2 It will NOT touch your cIOSes, stub anything, or touch your boot2. It also will NOT trucha sign any of the IOSes it downloads and installs. If you want to pirate, you’ll have to go ahead and use DOP-IOS or similar to trucha patch your IOS70 after the upgrade is complete

It is almost completely automated. Answer a question in the beginning, sit back and relax, and wait for the update to be completed. When finished, you’ll be on v4.2 with everything functional (no upside down HBC, no “vulnerable IOS not found” errors). This should hopefully eliminate all of the goofy issues people have been having with the upgrade.

If you have any problems or questions please post them below and I will do my best to answer them.

Just used this and it worked! It took a few tries to get it working though as it kept re-starting and going back to the Homebrew channel but after multiple tries…it worked and now I’m on 4.2. Homebrew channel did turn upside down though but re-installing using the guide here corrected that strange situation. Thanks Again!

  2. Thanks for the step-by-step instructions. I’m going to try this on my Wii later today when I get home. We’ll see how it goes!

Dear Chris – I had softmod-ed my 4.2U according to your guide – It worked. I realized that I am not having the Wii Internet Channel. Being on 4.2U already, do I follow this guide to perform system update for the Internet Channel? Or is there an alternative apart from doing system update? Thanks :)

  4. Chris says:

The internet channel is an extra. You can get it by using the Shopping Channel.

  5. karl says:

Thanks. I actually tried what you had suggested by going to the Shopping Channel. However it directed me to perform System Update when I select the Internet Channel. So it seems that a System Update must be done…

  6. Chris says:

You will be better off looking for the Internet Channel on the net somewhere. Its available in a .WAD file which you can just install using Wad Manager in the Homebrew Channel.

If you do an update you will have to re-softmaod your wii again.

  7. karl says:

Thanks. I think I had observed my earlier problem wrongly. I think I was having problem loading the Shopping Channel – it actually prompted for System Update. So I had tried your guide above but it failed when trying to install IOS70 v6687 – no harm was done though. I then tried http://www.wiihacks.com/homebrew-downloads/26691-wii-shop-ios61-installer-12.html and succeeded in installing Shop Channel v18. I was able to download the Internet Channel via the new Shop Channel. Cheers.

Just a heads up i had issues installing with network errors. I searched and found that nintendo reccomends router channel to be set at 1 or 11. Mine was at 6 and keep killing connection. Soon as i set it to channel 1 download and update went through perfect.

    error -116? won’t initialize network…

  10. Mus says:

Dear Chris. Thanks for the updater. I have carried out all the instructions. The Wii has gone through the processes of downloading and installing and saying complete. But once i restart the Wii it still says version 3.3U. Does this mean it has been updated to 4.2 but only shows the original version or has it not worked

  11. Chris says:

No this means it has not worked. Try switching off and unplugging for a few seconds then switching on. If it still says 3.3 try doing it again.

Also do you have the SD Card Icon on the bottom left of the home screen?

  12. Jason says:

tried updating but no luck after five attempts. All loads up then at the end its failed. any help?

  13. Chris says:

OK firstly you only need to post once, I have deleted your other two identical questions.

What error message are you getting?

Also you can try it using another method here:

I have the same problem it all finishes but still says 3.3 i dont have an sd card thing on my main menu?

  15. Paudy says:

Its ok mate got it sorted, just done it again and it worked! Thanks

  16. netboy says:

Chris quick question what are the benefits of system updating 4.2 via homebrew vs. just updating in the Wii system menu to 4.2?

  17. Chris says:

Doing it via homebrew should keep most of the softmod files intact.

  18. netboy says:

    ok thanks

  19. Ali says:

    Hi,
I am a new in this wii world, I would need your help as I have the system menu 3.4E, to get the Homebrew channel installed I need to upgrade to ver. 4.2. but you are saying that inorder to upgrade to version 4.2 it is required to have Homebrew channel already installed. so which on is first ??!!! I tried to run the SD that contains the files for Homebrew channel but simply my wii freeze.
    Which one first please.
    Thanks in advance

    Hope this helps :)

  21. Joe says:

Can you still do this now that 4.3 is out

  22. Joe says:

And can you do this to virgin wii like 3,2 3.3 etc,,,
install homebrew and use this guide and after use 4.2 softmod guide

  23. Chris says:

Yes it will work now that 4.3 is out.

Also yes it will work on 3.2 and 3.3.

Once updated to 4.2 you can follow the softmod guide as normal :)

  24. JAMES says:

    Hi Chris,

I have a softmodded 3.2 WII (Pal) and tired using the updater though my Homebrew channel, the program runs fine but when installing (The first files) it tells me 1 file not installed and ask me to cont or not. I choose not to Cont as the Program/Installer suggests.

Any idea why it does this Chris?

    Thanks

    James

  25. Chris says:

Can you confirm your WiFi is setup and working?

  26. JAMES says:

    Hi Chris,

Yes the Wifi is setup and working perfectly..

  27. Rodrigo says:

    Hi Chris,

I’m have a 3.4U Wii with Homebrew channel and NeoGamma installed, and I would like to update my Wii to 4.2 menu. Will your guide work?

    Thanks!

  28. Chris says:

@ James – Try re-formatting the SD Card (Slow Format) and try again. If that fails try updating manually following this guide: http://www.chrislowthian.co.uk/safely-update-your-nintendo-wii-to-system-menu-4-2/518/

@ Rodrigo – Yes should work fine.

  29. JAMES says:

    Chris,

I did as you suggested but alas the same problem..

    install returned -1
    Installation complete!
    Something failed. Sorry.

    There was an error.
Continue with other installations? (It is not reccomended)

    Press ‘A’A to Confirm – Press ‘B’B to Deny…

I have usb loaderGX and Neogamma R8 installed along with ISO38 Rev 17..

    Thanks for your time..

  30. Chris says:

OK instead of using WAD Manager download Multi-Mod Manager from here: http://mmm4wii.posterous.com/

Add to SD Card and load from Homebrew Channel. Then go down the menu and choose “WAD Manager” and try installing them with that.

  31. Beverley says:

i have a wii but when i try to access the shoppingchannel it says it nto available in my region. why is this and is there a way to get pass this.

  32. Chris says:

Sorry not sure this can be bypassed, maybe worth having a quick search through Google though.

  33. Clive Douglas says:

    Hi Chris

I’ve tried several times to download files from the ‘uploading.com’ site but it keeps telling me that I’ve reached my daily limit & to try again tomorrow, even though nothing has been downloaded. Is there a mirror site or could you just email the files (4.2 safe firmware updater) to me.

    With Thanks

    Clive

  34. Chris says:

    You have email :)
