Stunning Windows 7 Icon Packs

February 18th, 2010 by Chris | Filed under Computers and Software.

Windows 7Since moving over to Windows 7 a few months back there has been more and more Windows 7 Themes appearing on the Microsoft Site.

The one thing which has not put in an appearance is nice new icon packs for Windows 7. Icons can make the the look and feel of the operating system look very slick and modern.

After doing some research I came across a post on the Windows 7 Forums which had some great sets of icons for Windows 7 which include the install instructions and also an installer program for Windows 32bit and 64bit.

Here are some previews of the Windows 7 Icons. Continue reading below for full install instructions and how to backup your existing icons:

Here are the instructions which can be found in the readme file:

IMPORTANT INSTALL NOTE!
———————–
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ‘USER ACCOUNT CONTROL’ IS FULLY DISABLED BEFORE
TRYING TO INSTALL OR UNINSTALL!!!
User Account Control Settings can be located in:
‘Control Panel\User Accounts\Change User Account Control Settings’

INSTALLATION
————
To install Mr GRiM’s Glossy Blue Icon Pack, extract the folder called
‘MrGRiMsIcons’ and then run the ‘INSTALL.cmd’ inside the folder.

CREATE BACKUPS!
—————
It’s HIGHLY recommended that you backup the files yourself to a safe
location before proceeding.
The install does create backups and a System Restore Point but if
something was to go wrong (like a power failure during running) you then
have another way out!

The files required for backing-up are as follows:
(32Bit)
x:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll
x:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll
x:\Windows\System32\imagesp1.dll

(64Bit)
x:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll
x:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll
x:\Windows\System32\imagesp1.dll
x:\Windows\SysWOW64\imageres.dll
x:\Windows\SysWOW64\shell32.dll
x:\Windows\SysWOW64\imagesp1.dll

RESTARTS ARE IMPORTANT
———————-
You MUST restart after installing/un-installing, The scripts will ask you
when they have finished their work.
Please restart ASAP after running, the scripts shutdown some services and
the only way to guarantee all is running again is to restart the system.

RE-INSTALLATION
—————
The files can ONLY be installed then removed once without running the util
in the ‘Data’ folder called ‘UninstallCleanup.cmd’.. this is a safety feature
to prevent the original files (once backed-up) being over-wrote.
