Update The Wii Shop Channel Without Updating Your Wii

If you have softmodded your Wii you may be stuck with a Wii Shop Channel that needs to be updated before it will work. The problem with this is that it tells you to run the system update, which as you probably know will remove your softmod and homebrew files.

There is a way you can do this manually, which will only update your Shop Channel and not the systems firmware. I have only tried this on 4.2 though so it is up to you if you want to try it on other system menu versions.

Once you have updated the Shop Channel you will then be able to buy and download games with no problems. If you don’t use the Shop Channel there is no point following these instructions as it does not affect any other functions of the Wii.

Requirements:

  • SD Card
  • Wii connected to Internet
  • Homebrew Channel Installed
  • WiiSCU v0.24 or later from here

Update Instructions:

  • Remove all GameCube memory cards and controllers (very important!).
  • Unzip the WiiSCU zip and copy the “WiiSCU” folder and its contents to sd:/apps.
  • Start WiiSCU in the Homebrew Channel.
  • Read the startup message, then push 1 when prompted to continue.
  • Select the “Install IOS61 ?” option and set it to “-Trucha” with the D-pad.
  • Select the “Wii Shop Channel ?” option and set it to “v19″ with the D-pad.
  • Select the “Install/Update All Selected” option with the D-pad and Push A to “Go”.
  • You will be asked to confirm your action. Push A again.
  • Wait as the tool downloads the needed information from the Internet and installs it on your Wii.
  • Select Exit with A to close the application, then restart your Wii.

    Hi Chris.
I was on 4.2 and did the “Ultimate Nintendo Wii 4.2 Softmod guide” everything worked just fine, but I ended on 4.1 version and didn’t notice until I used the “Darkwii Theme” update and got my “Wii Settings” blocked, wich I fixed using a 4.1 Theme update…

Can I use these “Shop Channel Update” or should I use the “Nintendo Wii 4.2 Safe Firmware Updater” first?

Thanks very much for your support!!!

  2. Chris says:

Used the 4.2 Safe Firmware Updater too. Also the “Ultimate Nintendo Wii 4.2 Softmod guide” is an older guide you should be following this one:

    Is your WiFi Setup ok?

Try re-formatting the SD Card (Slow Format in FAT32) and trying again.

Try downloading the correct Shopping Channel WAD using ModWii – http://code.google.com/p/nusad/downloads/detail?name=ModMii4.2.3.zip

Then install the WAD file using WAD Manager or Multi-Mod Manager.

Tried updating Wii Ship Channel using the above method but on the last file (#15) I got an error staying “hash bad”. Using 4.2

  8. Chris says:

Which file is giving you the hash bad?

  9. Constantine says:

Didn’t have a file name just a number, when I set IOS61 to -trucha, and Wii Shop Channel to -V19, it got all the way to #15 when it said bad hash, then I tried a 2nd time and it came up right away on file #1. Not sure where to go from here…
